Two prototypes were used which were adapted for areas with swampy land. When working on plots with swampy conditions, the prototype whose tractor belonged to Valencia City Council was used and for the remainder of plots, a tractor service was hired to haul the rotobaler.

The bales of stalks were removed from the fields with the help of a tractor and were transported to a plot on platforms, where they were accumulated for their subsequent transfer to the composting plant.

The three rotobalers were used. In order to haul the rotobalers, two tractors and two drivers were hired and the third tractor, the protype belonging to the Valencia City Council was only used on plots with swampy ground.

As in previous years, a controlled fire was carried out in the areas which were not baled by the guards from the Agrarian Counsel, Valencia Town Council, using the favourable winds to ensure that the smoke be dispersed towards less inhabited areas and to substantially reduce the environmental impact on the Park and urban areas. In the same way as previously, the bales of straw were removed from the fields with the aid of a tractor and were transported to a plot on platforms where they were accumulated for their subsequent transfer to the composting plant.

Conclusions on the operative system for the gathering of rice stalks

The average parameters established for the gathering of rice stalks are as follows:

  • Baling time for one bale: 2 min. 4 s
  • No. of bales per hour: 29
  • No. of bales per hectare: 16
  • No. of bales per hour per hanegada (831 m2): 1.3
  • Dimensions of the bale: Cilinder 1.25 m in diameter and 1.17 m in height
  • Volume of the bale: 1.45 m3
  • Weight of the bale: 334 kg
  • Density of the bale: 230 kg/m3
